Jamie Schembri
I'm Jamie. Pleased to meet you!
I'm an English/Maltese man on the wrong side of thirty, and I live in the Netherlands with my partner and two dogs.
At work I'm a freelance software engineer. I primarily work with Ruby codebases and often find myself involved in large migration projects and infra. I've done work for a fair number of different companies, which I think has made me pretty versatile.
Professionally, I'm interested in reducing complexity in favour of simplicity, "good enough" software, and a focus on business value over technical supremacy. At a more practical level, I'm fond of learning new tools and experimenting with different languages to introduce myself to fresh ideas.
I started writing to both improve my writing skills and share thoughts and tidbits from my professional life. Since LLMs took off and up-ended said profession, though, I'm using it as a somewhat creative outlet which feels all the more necessary now.
In my free time, I like to work on DIY projects, read, and try new things.
My hair isn't that long any more, by the way. Finding a new avatar is difficult when you're afraid of cameras.
